The Alaska Engineering Education Fund is helping provide me a path to my dreams as a nuclear engineer. I plan to study nuclear engineering at the University of Michigan starting in the fall of 2023 and the scholarships they have granted me go a long way in making this path attainable to me.

Thank you so much for the scholarship and all the support! I am so excited to be going to college, especially because of this year’s unique situation. I am attending Brigham Young University and the classes are about half in person, half online with a few adjustments to reduce health risks even further. I just completed my first full week of college courses! I’ll be honest, things are moving very fast already, but I love it. I am taking two classes that are directly tied to my declared major, chemical engineering. The ChEn class that I am most excited for is held in the brand new engineering building and the lab is beautiful! I have a few ideas rolling around in my head on where I want to go with that, from textiles to outer space to reducing plastic in the environment. All of them are, of course, amazing, but I’m also excited to discover more awesome things that chemical engineers can do. Regardless of what I choose to do exactly, I want to make the world a little better than I found it. I think everyone wants to do that. Most people keep it at wanting to change the world, but you did it! You got me to college, and that made my world better.
Although times have been different than I was expecting, I have been blessed with a safe home, a summer job, and a plan for the rest of the year. I’ve been lucky enough to have had a summer job at a local garden center, so with the money I earned from the summer employment and your scholarship, I can completely avoid debt for my freshman year. That is huge for my future. One thing I learned in my personal finance class is once you gain debt, it is extremely difficult to get rid of. This scholarship gives me the boost I needed to start my college years off right, without debt or worry of it. I’m looking forward to this fall and all of the good or learning experiences that I will have.
Thank you again! I am grateful for every opportunity I have been given that has gotten me here, and I’m looking forward to seeing where your opportunity will take me in the future.
